Buying tip: Choose food-grade seed sold specifically for sprouting—not ordinary garden seed, which may be treated for planting.

Directions

  1. Clean first. Wash your hands, jar, lid and draining equipment thoroughly with hot, soapy water; rinse well.
  2. Soak. Add the broccoli sprouting seeds to the jar, cover with several inches of cool water and soak for 8–12 hours.
  3. Drain completely. Pour off the soaking water through the mesh lid. Set the jar upside down at an angle so water can escape and air can circulate.
  4. Rinse twice daily. Morning and evening, fill the jar with cool water, swirl gently and drain very thoroughly. Keep it at normal room temperature and out of direct sunlight.
  5. Let them green. Around day 4 or 5, when the tiny leaves have opened, give the jar several hours of indirect light.
  6. Harvest and chill. Rinse once more, drain thoroughly and let the sprouts dry well. Refrigerate promptly in a clean container lined with a paper towel.
